Be precise about the address — the Quadrate confuse forms, not just people
A central Mannheim address is a letter, a block number and a house number: 'P7, 24'. Online forms designed for street names sometimes mangle it, and a mismatch between your rental contract, your registration and your bank can hold up a permit. Copy the format exactly as it appears on the contract, every time.

Issued automatically after registration and arriving within a few weeks. Until your employer has it, payroll applies the least favourable tax class — recoverable at filing, but a real cash-flow hit in your first months.

Ask for the EU Blue Card by name if you qualify
It gives faster access to a settlement permit, easier family reunification with immediate spousal work rights, and more freedom to change employer than a general work permit. Roche, John Deere, Daimler Truck and the university process these routinely but will default to whatever they filed last time unless asked.

Things most newcomers don’t know

One government, one queue — which is not true of every German city this size.

Mannheim is a Stadtkreis, a city that is also its own district. Registration and the residence permit are both the city's business. In Aachen the permit belongs to the StädteRegion and in Hannover to the Region, and in both places newcomers lose weeks assuming the first appointment started the second. Here it does not arise.

Write your address exactly as the contract does.

'P7, 24' is a complete Mannheim address and 'Quadrat P7, Haus 24' is not the form the registers use. Systems built for street names sometimes normalise it wrongly, and a mismatch between the rental contract, the Meldebescheinigung and the bank is a real cause of delay on the permit. Copy, do not paraphrase.

Church tax is 8% in Baden-Württemberg.

Declaring church membership at Anmeldung triggers automatic deduction on top of income tax — 8% of the liability here and in Bavaria, 9% in every other state. It is decided in a five-minute appointment most newcomers do not know has a price, and leaving later needs a formal appointment and fee.

If you are moving from Ludwigshafen, you are changing federal state, not just city.

The Rhine is the border between Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Moving across it changes your church tax rate, your property tax model, your children's school holidays and which state's tenancy ordinances cover you — and it still requires a full Anmeldung, because it is a new municipality.
