Two doors, and one of them was replaced this year. Express Entry ranks you on points, needs no employer and no provincial involvement, and carries a six-month service standard after an invitation. The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program is the second door, and it changed completely: Ontario closed all of its previous streams and launched a single new Ontario Workforce Priority stream in mid-2026, so every guide describing the old Human Capital Priorities, Employer Job Offer and Masters Graduate streams now describes something that no longer exists. A nomination is still worth 600 points federally, which in practice decides the matter — but there is now one route to it rather than nine.

Ontario exchanges licences directly with a defined list of countries and with every Canadian province; everyone else enters graduated licensing and tests — but since 1 July 2026 they can claim up to twelve months of foreign driving experience on presentation of an original licence, which lets them sit the G2 road test immediately instead of waiting. Insurance is private and heavily territory-rated, and the Peel territory is expensive; a letter of experience from your former insurer is the single most valuable document you can bring. And Highway 407 across the north of the city is a private toll road with no booths, which bills you by licence plate weeks later.

Opening a chequing account takes under an hour and every major bank runs a newcomer package with waived fees and no requirement for Canadian credit history. The part that catches people is that your credit record does not cross the border. In the GTA a landlord chooses between applicants partly on a credit check, so an empty file is not merely inconvenient — it is what loses you the flat. Get the account and the credit card in the same appointment, and walk into your first viewing with an employment letter that does the work a credit report would.

OHIP is Ontario's public health insurance and it has no waiting period: the three-month wait was removed from the regulations in March 2020, so an eligible resident is covered from the moment of enrolment. You apply in person at a ServiceOntario centre with one document from each of three categories. Hospital care in Mississauga is Trillium Health Partners — Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley and the Queensway site — and the Mississauga Hospital site is in the middle of a roughly $14 billion rebuild that began in 2025, so expect construction, changed entrances and shifting parking for years. As everywhere in Ontario, the card is the easy part and finding a family doctor is the slow one.

Every phone sold in Canada has been unlocked since 2017, so bring your handset. Without a Canadian credit file a postpaid plan means a credit check and often a deposit — unless you ask for a newcomer plan and present a work permit, study permit or PR card, which waives it. The cheapest sensible route is a flanker brand riding the same network as its parent. Home internet in Mississauga is better served than most of Canada, with cable and fibre competing across much of the city, but the pricing is promotional and reverts silently at term end, which is the largest avoidable cost in Canadian telecom.

One return to the CRA, due 30 April, covering both federal and Ontario tax. The combined top marginal rate approaches 53% and sales tax is 13% HST on nearly everything. All of that is identical to Toronto; there is no Mississauga tax advantage and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What is genuinely local is the property tax bill, which is levied by the City but includes a Region of Peel portion and an education portion, and the stormwater charge, which is not on the tax bill at all — it arrives on the Region's water bill and is calculated from how much hard surface your property has.

What to know before you go
You are governed by two municipalities, and one of them is being dismantled around you
CriticalThe City of Mississauga runs transit, roads, parks, libraries, fire and by-law; the Region of Peel runs water and wastewater, public health, paramedics, long-term care and social housing, and Peel Regional Police covers both Mississauga and Brampton. Knowing which is which saves hours. The split is also moving: the Peel Transition Implementation Act, 2025 received Royal Assent on 11 December 2025, transferred waste collection to the City with effect from 1 January 2026, and legislated the transfer of regional roads and their stormwater infrastructure for 1 July 2026 — with the Minister able to prescribe a later date, which is exactly what has been happening. Before you report a pothole or query a bin, check who currently owns the service rather than assuming.
Mississauga is not the cheap version of Toronto, and budgeting as if it were is the standard mistake
CriticalAsking rents here sit within a few tens of dollars of Toronto's, not hundreds below. What the money buys is different — newer buildings, more square footage, a parking space and a locker — but the headline number is roughly the same, and once you add a car and its insurance, which most of the city genuinely requires, the total is frequently higher. If your reason for choosing Mississauga is price, look at Hamilton instead and be honest about the commute you are buying.
Ontario's rent cap has a hole in it exactly where the new towers are
CriticalThe 2026 guideline limits most increases to 2.1%, with at least 90 days' written notice and no more than one increase in twelve months. But units first occupied for residential purposes after 15 November 2018 are exempt from the guideline entirely, and a landlord of an exempt unit can raise the rent by any amount. Mississauga's City Centre is largely post-2018 towers. Ask when the building was first occupied before you sign anything, and treat the answer as a material term.
Do not plan your life around the Hazel McCallion Line yet
ImportantThe 18-kilometre light rail line up Hurontario from Port Credit was meant to open in 2024. Metrolinx has since told city councillors it is targeting substantial completion in spring 2028, and completing construction is not the same as opening — testing and revenue-service demonstration follow it. Rental listings along the corridor have been selling the line as imminent for six years. Rent for the transit that exists today, which on Hurontario means a frequent bus in traffic.
The 407 has no toll booths, and that is the trap
ImportantHighway 407 ETR is privately operated across the north of the city with open-road tolling: no booths, no barriers, cameras that read your licence plate, and an invoice weeks later that includes a charge for the camera bill itself if you have no transponder. Rental cars and newly arrived drivers end up on it constantly because the signage assumes you already know. Learn where it joins the 403 and the 401, and decide deliberately rather than accidentally.
One Fare removed the double fare, which quietly changed which neighbourhoods work
Good to knowSince February 2024, paying with PRESTO, debit or credit lets you transfer free between MiWay and the TTC, and between the TTC and GO, instead of paying two full fares — and the province extended the programme in December 2025. A Mississauga-to-Toronto commute that used to cost two fares each way now costs materially less, which makes the eastern half of the city and the Lakeshore West corridor better value than most published advice still assumes.

One of the two largest life-sciences clusters in Canada, several hundred companies deep and old enough that the north of the city has been called Pill Hill for decades. Roche committed a further half-billion dollars to its Mississauga operation and several hundred jobs with it.

Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Air Canada, WestJet, Bombardier, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Menzies, Swissport
Toronto Pearson is inside the city limits and hundreds of employers operate on the field, from airlines and ground handlers to federal agencies. Bombardier's Global aircraft manufacturing centre is on the airport's edge. The surrounding employment lands are among the densest concentrations of jobs in the country.

The largest office market in Canada outside downtown Toronto, and where a great many multinationals put their Canadian head office — close to the airport, cheaper per square foot than the financial district, and reachable by car from three directions.

Heartland and the airport lands form one of the biggest industrial and distribution belts in North America, sitting on the 401, the 403, the 407 and the rail intermodal yards. It is unglamorous, it is enormous, and it hires constantly.
Health care & education
Trillium Health Partners, Peel Region public health, University of Toronto Mississauga, Sheridan College, Peel District School Board
Trillium Health Partners runs Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley and the Queensway site, and the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital rebuild — a roughly $14 billion project begun in 2025 — is the largest hospital construction project in the country. UTM sits on the Credit River and Sheridan has a campus downtown.
Finance, insurance & technology services
RBC and TD operations centres, Aviva, Allstate Canada, Sun Life, Deloitte, Ceridian/Dayforce, SOTI
Back-office and technology operations for national banks and insurers, plus a genuine home-grown software presence — SOTI is a Mississauga company of real scale. Salaries trail downtown Toronto's, and so does the commute.
Where to go in Mississauga
Port Credit
Neighborhood · Lakeshore Road at the Credit River
The city's actual village — a working harbour at the river mouth, patios along Lakeshore Road, a lighthouse, and a GO station with all-day service to Union in about twenty minutes.
Local tip: This is the one part of Mississauga that behaves like a town rather than a set of arterials, and the rents reflect that. Come by GO rather than driving: parking is contested on summer weekends, and the whole point of Port Credit is walking between the harbour, the marina and the pubs without moving a car.
Celebration Square & the Absolute towers
Landmark · City Centre, beside Square One
The civic square in front of the Central Library and City Hall, with a skating rink in winter and free events all summer — overlooked by the two twisting Absolute World towers that everyone calls the Marilyn Monroe buildings.
Local tip: The towers are the closest thing the city has to a signature, and they were the result of an international design competition won by a then-unknown Beijing practice. Come to the square in July for the food festivals and in December for the rink; it is the one place downtown that feels like a downtown.
Streetsville
Neighborhood · Queen Street South, north-west of the centre
A nineteenth-century village on the Credit River that the city grew around and never demolished — two-storey brick main street, independent shops, and a stubborn separate identity signposted as 'the village in the city'.
Local tip: Go on a Saturday morning for the farmers' market and walk the river trail from the old mill. It is also worth understanding as a housing decision: Streetsville is on the Milton GO line, which runs peak-only and in one direction, so it is a very different commute from Port Credit despite looking similar on a map.
Rattray Marsh & the Waterfront Trail
Hidden gemNature · Clarkson, south-west lakeshore
The last remaining lakeshore marsh between Toronto and Burlington, saved from development by a residents' campaign in the 1970s, with boardwalks through the wetland and a shingle beach on Lake Ontario.
Local tip: Walk east from the marsh along the Waterfront Trail and you can follow the lake most of the way across the city, through Jack Darling Park and on to Port Credit. In February the shoreline ice formations are extraordinary and almost nobody is there.
Cooksville & the Hurontario food strip
Food · Hurontario at Dundas
The oldest crossroads in the city and its most densely immigrant one — Polish delis that have been there fifty years alongside Pakistani, Syrian, Vietnamese and Chinese kitchens in the same strip malls.
Local tip: Mississauga's food is in plazas, not on high streets, and Cooksville is where that is most concentrated. Do not judge a place by its signage or its parking lot. The city's Polish community here predates almost everything else, and the bakeries are the proof.
Small Arms Inspection Building
Hidden gemCulture · Lakeview, eastern lakeshore
A restored Second World War munitions inspection plant, where a largely female workforce checked rifles by the million, now an arts and events space on the edge of the Lakeview redevelopment lands.
Local tip: It is the best surviving piece of the city's industrial past and it is a five-minute walk from where the Lakeview Generating Station's four chimneys stood until 2007. Check the programme before going — it opens for exhibitions and events rather than continuously.
