OHIP with no waiting period, Trillium Health Partners, and the hospital being rebuilt around you

OHIP is Ontario's public health insurance and it has no waiting period: the three-month wait was removed from the regulations in March 2020, so an eligible resident is covered from the moment of enrolment. You apply in person at a ServiceOntario centre with one document from each of three categories. Hospital care in Mississauga is Trillium Health Partners — Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley and the Queensway site — and the Mississauga Hospital site is in the middle of a roughly $14 billion rebuild that began in 2025, so expect construction, changed entrances and shifting parking for years. As everywhere in Ontario, the card is the easy part and finding a family doctor is the slow one.

Total cost
OHIP enrolment is free and there is no premium. Private insurance is required if your status is not OHIP-eligible, and for drugs, dental and vision, which OHIP does not cover for working-age adults. Hospital parking in the GTA is an expensive and genuinely underestimated cost for anyone with a course of treatment.
Time needed
Same-day enrolment at a ServiceOntario centre; card mailed afterwards. Being matched with a family doctor can take a great deal longer.
Validity
Health cards are renewed periodically. You must maintain Ontario as your primary residence to stay eligible.

High confidence·New Ontario residents with an OHIP-eligible immigration status — permanent residents and certain work-permit holders. Visitors and most short-term permit holders are not eligible and need private cover. Public health, paramedics and vaccination clinics here are run by the Region of Peel rather than by the City.

Before you start

  • OHIP-eligible immigration status
  • Ontario as your primary place of residence
  • Intention to be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 of your first 183 days
  • Original supporting documents — one from each of the three categories

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Assemble one document from each of the three required categories

You need proof of citizenship or OHIP-eligible immigration status, proof of Ontario residency, and proof of identity. The accepted-documents list is specific and being one document short is the most common reason a trip to ServiceOntario is wasted. Check what you actually hold against the list before you travel.

Apply in person at a ServiceOntario centre

Applicants over 16 generally must apply in person; this is not an online transaction. There are several centres across Mississauga and neighbouring Peel, and the smaller suburban ones are markedly faster than the busiest.

Take the coverage immediately — do not buy three months of private insurance

Eligible applicants are covered from enrolment. The three-month wait was abolished in 2020 and a great deal of published advice, and word of mouth, has never caught up. The photo card arrives by post afterwards; the coverage does not wait for it.

Register to be matched with a family doctor on day one

Ontario runs a provincial service that matches people without a family physician to one taking patients. Register when you arrive rather than when you first need care — the queue is long everywhere in the GTA and your position depends on when you joined.

Learn where your nearest emergency department and urgent care actually are

Trillium Health Partners runs Mississauga Hospital on the Queensway, Credit Valley Hospital in the west of the city, and the Queensway Health Centre. Which one is nearest is not obvious from a map of a city this spread out, and the Mississauga Hospital site is an active construction zone with entrances and parking that change. Look it up while nothing is wrong.

Arrange cover for what OHIP excludes

Prescription drugs for working-age adults, dental, vision and physiotherapy sit largely outside OHIP. Employer benefit plans normally fill these, which makes the benefits package a real part of a job offer rather than a footnote.

  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or OHIP-eligible immigration status (PR card, COPR, work permit)

Things most newcomers don’t know

There is no three-month wait, and newcomers still pay for private cover they do not need.

The waiting period was removed from the regulations in March 2020 and eligible residents are covered from enrolment. It remains one of the most persistently mis-reported facts about moving to Ontario — older guides, relocation agents and friends who arrived before 2020 all describe the old rule. Buying three months of travel insurance you do not need is a several-hundred-dollar mistake made on the strength of stale advice.

Public health and paramedics are the Region's, hospitals are Trillium's, and the card is the province's.

Three different bodies, and newcomers call the wrong one constantly. Peel Public Health runs vaccination, food safety, school health and outbreak management; Peel Regional Paramedic Services runs the ambulances; Trillium Health Partners runs the hospitals; ServiceOntario issues the card and OHIP pays the bills. If you have been transferred twice, you probably started at the wrong tier of government rather than the wrong department.

The hospital you are most likely to use is a building site until the 2030s.

The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital rebuild started in 2025 and is the largest hospital construction project in the country, replacing the existing site with a 22-storey tower and taking the campus past 950 beds. That is excellent news eventually and a practical nuisance now: entrances move, parking is constrained and routes through the site change. Check the current access arrangements before an appointment rather than relying on a previous visit.

There is a physical-presence test, and a long trip home in your first six months can cost you.

You are generally expected to be in Ontario for at least 153 of your first 183 days. Newcomers who go back to settle affairs, or who take an extended visit after arriving, can put their eligibility in question at exactly the point they are relying on it. If a long absence is unavoidable, understand the rule before you book, not after.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying three months of private cover on the basis of the abolished waiting period.
  • Turning up at ServiceOntario without one document from each of the three required categories.
  • Waiting until you are ill to register for a family doctor.
  • Assuming prescriptions, dental and vision are covered — for working-age adults they largely are not.
  • Travelling extensively in your first six months and breaching the physical-presence expectation.
  • Driving to the Mississauga Hospital site without checking where the entrance is this month.
