Check whether your jurisdiction exchanges directly
Ontario exchanges with every Canadian province and territory and with a specific list of countries. If yours is on it, an equivalent licence converts straight to a full Class G. If it is not, you enter graduated licensing — but read the next step before assuming that means a long wait.

Claim the experience credit if you are not from an exchange country
Since 1 July 2026 you can claim a maximum of twelve months of driving experience by presenting an original, valid foreign licence. With twelve months credited you can take the G2 road test immediately, then wait at least a further twelve months before the full G road test. Bring the original document — a replacement issued recently shows a recent date and loses you the credit you actually earned.

Book a DriveTest appointment rather than walking in
Licence exchanges and road tests run through DriveTest centres, and the GTA centres are the busiest in the province. Book online, and be willing to travel to a quieter centre outside the urban core — the difference in waiting time for a road test slot can be months.

Get several insurance quotes, and expect the Peel number to sting
Ontario auto insurance is private, and premiums are rated heavily on the territory the car is garaged in. Brampton and Mississauga postal codes are among the most expensive in the country, largely for reasons that have nothing to do with you. Quote through a broker as well as direct, and quote again at renewal rather than letting it roll.

Bring a letter of experience from your previous insurer
Documented claims-free years from abroad are credited by most Canadian insurers and can cut a premium substantially — but only against a letter from the former insurer stating the period and the claims record. Request it before you leave. Obtaining it afterwards, across time zones, from a company with no reason to hurry, is genuinely difficult.

Decide about the 407 deliberately, before you are on it
Highway 407 ETR is privately operated with open-road tolling — no booths, no barriers, cameras reading plates, and a bill weeks later that adds a camera charge if you have no transponder. It is also frequently the difference between a 25-minute and a 70-minute crossing of the region. Work out what a regular trip would cost you per month and choose; the mistake is ending up on it by accident and finding out from an invoice.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The 1 July 2026 experience credit is the most important recent change for anyone outside the exchange list.

Before it, drivers from non-agreement countries served a waiting period inside graduated licensing regardless of how long they had been driving. Now up to twelve months of foreign experience is credited on presentation of an original licence, which lets you sit the G2 straight away. Almost everything written before mid-2026 overstates how long you will be restricted, and newcomers still plan around the old rule.

A G2 is not a learner's permit, and mistaking it for one costs people a year of independence.

G2 holders drive alone, on any road, with restrictions on blood alcohol and on passengers for younger drivers. Newcomers frequently assume they cannot drive unaccompanied until the full G and therefore do not buy a car, in a city where not having one narrows your job search severely. Practically, the G2 is the licence that changes your life here.

Where you garage the car matters as much as how you drive it.

Ontario premiums are territory-rated, and Brampton and Mississauga postal codes are consistently among the highest-rated in Canada. The same driver with the same record pays materially more here than in, say, Ottawa. It is worth quoting before you sign a lease if you are choosing between municipalities, because the annual difference can be larger than the rent difference.

You can live here without a car, but only along a few specific corridors.

Port Credit and Clarkson have all-day two-way GO service; City Centre has the busway and the frequent Hurontario buses; and One Fare means the transfer to the TTC no longer costs a second full fare. Outside those, the city is arterial roads and plazas, and a job in the airport lands or Heartland on a shift pattern is not realistically transit-served. Decide the car question and the neighbourhood question together, not in sequence.

Relying on pre-July-2026 guidance about waiting periods for non-agreement jurisdictions.
Arriving without the original licence, or with a recently reissued one that hides your real experience.
Not requesting a claims-free letter from your home insurer before departing.
Buying a car before getting an insurance quote for a Mississauga postal code.
Wandering onto the 407 and discovering the toll from an invoice a month later.
Assuming an International Driving Permit substitutes for an Ontario licence once you are a resident. It does not.
