Shanghai's social life for newcomers runs through WeChat: groups share a QR code or an organiser's WeChat ID, and the schedule lives in the group chat. The big national expat clubs of the past have faded, and what works now is small groups around one thing, a Sunday run, a Saturday language exchange, a weekly speaking club. These are the ones we could confirm are running, each with the source we checked it against.

Where groups in Shanghai actually live
- Where nearly every group lives. You join by scanning a QR code or adding the organiser's WeChat ID, and sessions are announced in the group chat.
- Meetup
- Still used by some long-running groups, such as Language Mix, and it shows the next date before you commit.
- Blocked platforms
- Google, Facebook, YouTube and X are blocked in China, and VPNs need government licensing, so a group that only posts on Instagram or Facebook is hard to reach once you are here.
- Weekend afternoons carry the social groups: the main hash runs on Sunday afternoons, starting an hour later in summer, and Language Mix meets on Saturdays.
- Speaking clubs and most other weekly groups meet on weeknights around 7.
The unsaid rules
What residents say about making friends here, and the legal lines a group should not cross.
The old national clubs are gone; interest groups replaced them
The American, British and Swedish clubs that once anchored expat life are not really functioning any more, and the expat magazine that listed everything stopped years ago. The Shanghai Expatriate Association, volunteer-run since 1986, now works through about ten small interest groups.

Religious activity stays within registered organisations
China recognises five religions, and only registered religious organisations may hold religious activities; even they face limits on preaching and handing out materials. Keep faith out of the groups you join or start.

Stay away from demonstrations and large gatherings
Public order is enforced strictly and foreigners can be arrested, detained or deported over demonstrations. Sensitivities rise around particular dates and events, and photography near sensitive or military sites attracts attention.

Hike in a group, not alone
The UK government advises against hiking alone in isolated areas, which is one more reason to go out of the city with an organised group.

Events hosted by Globe Quest members
None scheduled right now. The groups above are where things are happening this week. If you want to start something of your own, members can post an event and invite people.

How this list is made
Every group here exists independently of Globe Quest. Each one is listed only when a source from the last 18 months shows it running: the organiser's own page, a dated article or listing, or residents on Reddit. Those sources are named on every card. We do not publish member counts or ratings, because nobody here counted them. If you run a group, use the form above to correct its listing or add yours.
