Assemble six points of ID before booking anything
New York's DMV scores your documents on a points scale and will not proceed below six. A foreign passport, an immigration document and proof of a New York address is the usual combination for a newcomer. Check the published points table against what you actually hold, because the trip is wasted otherwise and Westchester's county-run DMV offices in Yonkers, White Plains, New Rochelle and Mount Vernon fill up.

Exchange the licence within 30 days of becoming a resident
New York states plainly that a new resident must get a New York State driver licence within 30 days. Whether you sit tests depends on where your existing licence is from — New York has reciprocal arrangements with a specific and short list of jurisdictions, and everyone else takes the written test, and usually a road test after a permit period. Confirm your own country against the DMV's current list rather than another state's.

Register the vehicle and book the annual inspection
Every vehicle registered in New York must have a safety inspection every twelve months at a DMV-licensed station, and Westchester is inside the enhanced emissions inspection area, so the emissions test runs on the same annual cycle. There is no biennial option and no exemption for a newer car beyond its first years. Driving on an expired sticker is a ticket that is actively written here.

Set your satnav to avoid parkways before you move a single box
This is the Westchester rule everybody learns the hard way. The Saw Mill River, Cross County, Sprain Brook, Bronx River and Hutchinson River parkways all cross Yonkers and all ban commercial vehicles by law. NYSDOT's own warning cites posted clearances as low as 6 feet 11 inches and towing bills over USD 10,000 for a wedged tractor-trailer, plus fines, licence points and liability for repairing the bridge. Route a van or a box truck on the New York State Thruway (I-87) or the Major Deegan instead.

Work out whether you actually need the car
Yonkers has four Metro-North Hudson Line stations, a dense Bee-Line bus network and a free transfer onto the New York City subway. A household near Getty Square, Ludlow or Glenwood can plausibly run one car or none — which matters, because New York insurance in lower Westchester is expensive and off-street parking is a real premium on a rental listing. Try the transit option for a month before buying a second vehicle.

Understand winter here is ice, not snowfall totals
Yonkers is built on steep hills running down to the river, and the practical winter problem is a freeze-thaw glaze on a 12% gradient rather than the multi-foot snowfalls people associate with New York State. All-season tyres on a hill street in January are the local mistake. Check which streets your building is between, and find out who is responsible for clearing the sidewalk before you sign.

Things most newcomers don’t know

A parkway is not a highway, and your satnav does not know that.

New York's parkway system was designed in the 1920s for cars, and NYSDOT's published warning to commercial drivers cites low stone bridges with posted clearances down to 6 feet 11 inches. Commercial vehicles are banned outright, and getting a tractor-trailer unwedged has cost over USD 10,000 in towing before you reach the fines and the bridge repair bill. New York inspects every car every year, for safety and emissions both.

Arizona has no safety inspection at all; Kansas has neither; Wisconsin's emissions testing does not reach Madison. New York does both, annually, on every registered vehicle, and Westchester sits inside the enhanced emissions area. Someone arriving from a state with no inspection regime will meet a genuine mechanical bill in year one on a car that was perfectly legal at home.

A Bee-Line fare transfers onto the New York City subway for nothing.

Yonkers's buses are run by Westchester County, not the MTA, which makes people assume the two systems are separate. They are not: with OMNY or MetroCard, a Bee-Line ride transfers to NYC local buses and the subway at no additional charge within two hours. The base fare is USD 3.00 from 4 January 2026 and OMNY caps you at 12 paid rides in seven days. For a car-free household that transfer is the difference between Yonkers working and not.

Which of the four Hudson Line stations you live near is a bigger decision than the neighbourhood.

Yonkers has Greystone, Glenwood, Yonkers and Ludlow, all on Metro-North's Hudson Line into Grand Central, and they do not get the same service. Express and peak patterns differ station by station, so two flats a mile apart can be fifteen minutes apart on the actual commute. Check the timetable for the specific station at the specific time you would travel before you sign a lease.
