Getting set up in Israel
Residency: aliyah, or an employer-sponsored B/1
If you, a parent, a grandparent or your spouse are Jewish, the Law of Return entitles you to make aliyah: citizenship and an Israeli ID number essentially on arrival, arranged free in advance through the Jewish Agency or Nefesh B'Nefesh. Without that claim there is no general immigration route โ an Israeli employer must sponsor a B/1 work permit through the Population and Immigration Authority, and the foreign-expert track requires a salary of twice the national average wage. A B/2 visitor stamp, gated by a pre-travel ETA-IL, carries no work rights. There is no digital-nomad visa. Ashdod's practical advantage is that it absorbs immigrants at scale โ about 32% of residents are new immigrants โ so the municipal absorption apparatus, the ulpanim and the community organisations are genuinely well developed rather than nominal.

The Rav-Kav smartcard, or an account-based app, covers city buses and Israel Railways. Ad Halom station on the eastern edge is the link to Tel Aviv about 32 km up the coastal line, and Highway 4 runs the same corridor by road. Inside the city, the thing that surprises new arrivals is the topography: Ashdod is flat, built on a grid of self-contained quarters, and carries a large network of separated cycle paths, so a bicycle or an e-bike does more here than in almost any other Israeli city. As everywhere in Israel, buses and trains stop from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening. You may drive on a foreign licence for one year from entry, then convert at Misrad HaRishui.

Five banks dominate: Hapoalim, Leumi, Discount and Mizrahi-Tefahot on the branch model, plus the digital ONE ZERO. With a Teudat Zehut an account usually opens the same day; a non-resident account goes through compliance and can take several days. The cost that surprises people is fees โ a monthly account-management charge plus per-action fees, all negotiable if you ask for the cheapest plan or an olim track. Ashdod's advantage is language depth: with more than 60,000 Russian-speaking residents, a large French-speaking community and established Georgian and Amharic-speaking populations, branch staff who can take you through the terms in your own language are the norm rather than a favour.

Israel's universal system under the 1995 National Health Insurance Law runs through four health funds โ Clalit, Maccabi, Meuhedet and Leumit โ funded by a health-tax slice of National Insurance. Register with Bituach Leumi, choose one fund, and you receive the identical statutory benefits basket with small capped copays. Olim are covered from the day of aliyah with health tax usually waived for roughly the first six months. B/1 foreign workers are outside the system entirely: the Foreign Workers Law puts the insurance duty on the employer. The city-specific fact is recent: Ashdod had no hospital at all until Assuta Ashdod Medical Center opened in 2017 with about 300 beds under a government tender, run by Assuta, part of Maccabi Healthcare Services. Before that residents travelled to Kaplan in Rehovot or Barzilai in Ashkelon, and those remain the alternatives for anything Assuta does not do. Ambulance is 101.

Cellcom, Partner and Pelephone are the big three; Golan Telecom, Hot Mobile, 019 Mobile and Rami Levy compete at the bottom. No lock-in, and numbers port free in minutes. Home internet is an infrastructure layer plus an ISP, increasingly bundled, and Ashdod's largely post-1960s stock is better served than most older Israeli cities. The city-specific item is not a tariff: install the Home Front Command's Pikud HaOref alert app and make sure it is set to your actual address, because in a city this close to Gaza the alert arriving on your phone is the system, and its location setting is the difference between a useful warning and a useless one.

Israel taxes residents on worldwide income, with residency decided by a substantive centre-of-life test backed by day-count presumptions. New immigrants and senior returning residents are exempt from Israeli tax on foreign-source income and foreign capital gains for ten years โ but not on Israeli-source income, and anyone becoming resident on or after 1 January 2026 must now disclose foreign assets and income even though they remain untaxed. Rates are progressive with a surtax at the top, capital gains generally 25%, VAT 18%. What to know before you go
Ask about the mamad before you ask about anything else
CriticalAshdod sits roughly 30 km from Gaza and has been within rocket range for two decades. Israeli technical standards have required a reinforced room โ a mamad โ in new residential construction since the early 1990s, but Ashdod grew mostly between the 1960s and 1980s, so a large share of its housing stock predates the rule. Those buildings rely instead on a communal shelter (miklat) or a floor-level protected space, which is only useful if you can reach it inside the alert window. Find out which your building has, walk the route from the bedroom, and check your address's current shelter-entry time on the Home Front Command's app โ the times are set per locality and have been revised more than once.
Ashdod is addressed by quarter, not by street name
CriticalThe city was designed from scratch in the 1950s as a grid of self-contained quarters โ rova'im โ each with its own shops, schools and clinics, numbered and lettered rather than named. Locals will tell you they live in Rova Gimel or Rova Yod Alef and expect you to know roughly what that implies about price, age of stock, religiosity and distance to the sea. Listings, buses and small talk all use it. Learn the rova map in your first week and the whole city becomes legible.
This is an immigrant city in a way even Israelis find striking
ImportantAbout 32% of Ashdod's residents are new immigrants. It holds the largest Georgian Jewish community in the world and Israel's largest Moroccan and Karaite communities, more than 60,000 people arrived from the former Soviet Union in the 1990s, and there are established Ethiopian, French, American and British populations on top. The municipality publishes in Hebrew, English, Russian, French and Amharic. Practically, this means you can get by in your first months in a way you could not in most Israeli cities of this size โ and that Hebrew immersion is something you will have to seek out rather than have imposed on you.
Over 30% of the city is Haredi, and that decides the school question
ImportantAshdod's Haredi population is large, growing and concentrated in particular quarters, and Haredi children are a majority of the city's school pupils. That does not make Ashdod a religious city overall โ much of it is emphatically secular, and the beach on a Saturday makes that obvious โ but it does mean the state-secular school network is a smaller share of the total than the national average, and that which rova you live in materially changes the schools within walking distance. Decide the school stream before the neighbourhood.
The port is the economy, and it just got much bigger
ImportantThe Port of Ashdod handles around 60% of Israel's port cargo. The Hadarom container terminal, run by a subsidiary of Terminal Investment Limited and built with an 800-metre main quay able to take 18,000-TEU ships and roughly 1.7 million TEU of capacity, transformed the scale of the operation. Around it sit three industrial zones, the Eshkol power station, the oil refinery and the chemicals plants. If you work in shipping, freight forwarding, customs, energy or heavy industry, this is where the jobs are โ and much of it hires in English.
The commute to Tel Aviv is real but it is not a Tel Aviv suburb
Good to knowAd Halom station puts Tel Aviv about 32 km up the coastal line, and Highway 4 runs the same route. Plenty of people do it daily. But Ashdod was not built as a dormitory town and does not behave like one: it has its own port economy, its own hospital, its own cultural institutions and its own centre of gravity. If you are choosing it purely as cheap Tel Aviv, price the commute honestly at rush hour before committing โ and note the whole network stops for Shabbat.

Israel's largest port by cargo, handling roughly 60% of the country's port traffic, with a new semi-automated container terminal built for the largest ships afloat. Maritime, customs, terminal operations and logistics employ at real scale and much of the work runs in English.
Energy, refining and chemicals

The industrial zones beside the port make Ashdod one of Israel's heavy-industry centres. It is a substantial technical employer โ process, chemical, mechanical and safety engineering โ and it is also why the northern edge of the city is an industrial rather than a residential aspect.

Ashdod's port location and cheap industrial land made it a manufacturing city from the start. It remains one of the larger blue-collar and technician job markets in central Israel, distinct from the Tel Aviv service economy 32 km up the coast.
Healthcare
Assuta Ashdod Medical Center
Ashdod had no hospital at all until 2017, when Assuta Ashdod opened with about 300 beds after a government tender. It is now one of the city's largest employers and the reason residents no longer travel to Rehovot or Ashkelon for inpatient care.
Municipal and public services
Ashdod Municipality, the education network, the absorption and community services
A city of nearly 230,000 with a very large immigrant intake runs a correspondingly large public sector โ schools, absorption services, welfare and municipal administration are a major employer, and roles working with Russian-, French- or Amharic-speaking residents are frequently open to bilingual newcomers.
Culture and the arts
The Israeli Andalusian Orchestra Ashdod, the Ashdod Museum of Art (the MonArt centre), the city's performance venues
Ashdod invested unusually heavily in cultural institutions for a port city, and the Andalusian Orchestra โ playing the Judeo-Moroccan repertoire the city's founding community brought with it โ is a national institution based here rather than in Tel Aviv.

Nature ยท The full western edge of the city
Kilometres of unusually wide, clean sand backed by a continuous promenade, with the Lido and Riviera beaches at the busy end and quieter dunes to the south.
Local tip: The city's beaches are wider than Tel Aviv's and a fraction as crowded, which is the single most persuasive argument for living here. Go at dusk on a weekday when the whole city is out walking it.
Givat Yona (Jonah's Hill)
Landmark ยท Southern Ashdod, above the port
The highest point in the city, a dune-top with a lighthouse and a tomb traditionally associated with the prophet Jonah, looking straight down over the port cranes and the coast.
Local tip: This is the vantage point that explains the city: the port, the industrial zone, the residential quarters and the dunes all visible at once. Best in the late afternoon with the light behind you.
Ashdod Museum of Art โ the MonArt Centre
Culture ยท Central Ashdod
A serious contemporary art museum in a purpose-built centre, with a programme that punches far above what a port city of this size would normally sustain.
Local tip: Check what is on before you assume you know what a municipal museum means here. The MonArt centre also runs studios and classes, and it is one of the easier ways into the city's cultural life as a newcomer.
Ashdod-Yam and the Kal'at al-Mina fortress
Hidden gemLandmark ยท On the shore south of the marina
The ruins of an early-Islamic coastal fortress on the dunes, on a site occupied since the Bronze Age โ the ancient Ashdod that the modern city took its name from.
Local tip: Almost nobody visits, which is most of the appeal. Walk out from the tayelet at the end of the day; the walls are best photographed with the sea behind them.
Ad Halom Park and the bridge
Hidden gemCulture ยท Eastern edge, beside the Lachish stream
A green park on the Lachish where the Egyptian advance was halted in 1948, with the old bridge, an Australian soldiers' memorial from the First World War, and the railway station beside it.
Local tip: It doubles as the city's picnic and cycling park and as its main railway station, so it is both the nicest bit of green in Ashdod and the place you will actually spend time waiting for a train.
The Israeli Andalusian Orchestra Ashdod
Culture ยท Performing across the city's venues
A full orchestra dedicated to the Andalusian and Judeo-Moroccan repertoire, founded on the strength of the community that built this city, and a national institution based here.
Local tip: Go once even if the repertoire means nothing to you. It is the clearest possible statement of where a large part of Ashdod came from, and the audience is half the experience.
