The official Pikud HaOref app pushes rocket alerts by area. Set it to your actual address rather than a broad region, and check the shelter-entry time listed for your locality — the times are assigned per locality and have been revised more than once. This is the first app you install in Ashdod, before the bank's.

Switch to a resident monthly plan once your ID lands

Port your number rather than cancelling
Let the incoming carrier trigger the transfer. Cancelling the old line yourself forfeits the number permanently. Porting is free and usually completes within minutes.

Check what actually reaches your building
Before ordering home internet, establish whether the building has Bezeq's fixed line, HOT's cable or fibre. Ashdod's newer quarters are generally well covered; some 1960s and 1970s blocks in the older rova'im are not.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The alert app is a piece of safety infrastructure, and its location setting is the whole point.

In southern Israel the warning reaches you by phone before it reaches you by siren, and the app filters by area. Left on a default or a broad region it will either wake you for alerts that do not concern you — which trains you to ignore it — or miss ones that do. Set it to your actual address in your first hour in the city, and check what shelter-entry time is listed for your locality.

The blocker on a cheap plan is documentary, not financial.

Carriers require a Teudat Zehut and an Israeli account or card for the direct debit. New arrivals expect to walk into a store and sign up, get pushed onto prepaid at several times the price, and stay there for months. Plan explicitly to bridge on eSIM and switch the week your ID and bank account exist.

Never cancel the old line yourself when switching carriers.

Israeli number portability is free and near-instant, but only when the incoming carrier runs the transfer. Disconnect first and the number is gone permanently. It catches people who assume they should close the old contract before opening the new one.

Home internet is two products behind one price.

You buy an infrastructure layer — Bezeq, HOT or fibre — and separately an ISP, even when bundled. Ashdod's quarters were built decades apart and what is available differs sharply between them. Confirm availability at the exact address before signing, or the installation is simply cancelled.

Common mistakes to avoid

Cancelling your existing SIM before porting and losing the number.
Ordering from an ISP whose infrastructure your building does not support.
Signing up on an introductory price without reading the post-promotion rate.
