Learn what Tasmanian roads actually demand
Outside the Hobart-to-Launceston corridor the roads are narrow, winding and often unsealed, with no shoulder and no mobile coverage. Wildlife strike is a routine claim: Tasmania has among the highest rates of roadkill in the country, and dawn and dusk on any rural road carry genuine risk. Snow and black ice close the kunanyi summit road and the Central Highlands routes in winter.

Work out whether you need a car at all — you probably do
Hobart has no train or tram network and its bus system is built around commuter corridors. There is a Derwent ferry between Bellerive and the CBD which is genuinely useful if you live on the Eastern Shore. Everything else — and every reason to live in Tasmania — assumes a vehicle.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Six months, not three, and an extension is genuinely available.

New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and the ACT all run three-month windows; South Australia runs 90 days. Tasmania gives six months from the grant of permanent residency and Transport Services can extend it. That is real breathing room in a state where assessment slots are limited — but it also means advice copied from a mainland guide will have you panicking about the wrong deadline.

Wildlife on the road is the defining Tasmanian driving hazard.

Tasmania has among the highest rates of vehicle-strike wildlife deaths in the country, and the animals — wallabies, pademelons, possums, and the endangered devils and quolls that feed on the carcasses — are most active at dawn, dusk and after dark. Swerving is what injures people; braking straight is what does not. Comprehensive policies treat animal strike differently from other collisions, so check the terms before you sign one.

A Tasmanian licence unlocks more than driving here.

It is the standard primary photo ID for the 100-point check and for rental applications, and Tasmanian residency evidenced by it also gets you concessional or free entry to MONA and reduced ferry fares to Bruny Island. In a small state, proving you live here is worth more than it is on the mainland.

There is no rail or tram, and the ferry is the one real alternative.

Hobart's public transport is a bus network plus a Derwent River ferry between Bellerive and the CBD, which is fast, scenic and genuinely competitive with the Tasman Bridge at peak. If you are choosing between shores, the ferry is a real argument for the Eastern Shore. Everywhere else, plan on driving.
