Things most newcomers don’t know

There is no non-regional part of Tasmania, so the capital carries the regional benefits.

Only Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are excluded from designated regional Australia. Every Tasmanian address qualifies, which means 15 extra points on a 491 and access to regional streams while living in a capital city with a university, a tertiary hospital and an international science community. Hobart is Category 2 and the rest of the state Category 3 — the distinction matters mainly for how long a post-study work extension runs, with the more remote category attracting the longer one.

Tasmania's nomination is accessible, but it is built for people already on the island.

The state's criteria weight established residence, Tasmanian study and a genuine full-time Tasmanian job far above offshore applications, and the department verifies the job is real. The practical consequence is that a year on the ground here changes your eligibility more than a year anywhere else does — and that the streams open to a person with no Tasmanian connection are the narrowest of the lot.

The 482 salary floor rose to AUD 79,423 on 1 July 2026 and is indexed annually. Tasmania has the lowest median full-time earnings of any state, so a genuine local market rate for a role can sit below the federal floor. That is not a reason not to come — it is a reason to check the actual offer against the actual number before you resign anything, because the employer cannot simply nominate you at market rate if market rate is under the line.

Health and the university are where the demand actually is.

Tasmania has the oldest population profile of any Australian state and a health system under sustained pressure, so clinical and allied health occupations are the most consistently sought on the state list. The university is the other large employer that hires internationally without clearance requirements. Tourism and hospitality are the visible industries and are largely outside the skilled lists — a fine way to arrive, a poor foundation for a nomination.
